The lyrics detail endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent toughness called for a new sound – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The band's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

A former partner left Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet Haim will forever be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
