The megacity Awakens to Toxic Haze After Festival of Lights
As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that registered in the "severe" level.
Alarming Air Quality Readings
Multiple areas of the capital showed an air quality index above 500, which represents ten times the recommended threshold set by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, levels of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than healthy levels.
Firecracker Ban and Current Changes
Beginning in 2020, authorities had enforced a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the deadly smog that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather approaches.
Yet earlier this year, the recently formed regional leadership appealed to the judicial authority to propose a modification of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by environmentalists as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".
Judicial Decision and Reality
To the disappointment of environmental and health activists, judicial authorities approved the proposal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was considerable flouting of the designated hours across the capital, with little monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly version.
Several recording stations throughout the city recorded contamination reaching highest levels around midnight to the most severe measurements recorded during the festival in at least three years.
Regional Effects
Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali also initiated a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing declining pollution levels in their urban centers on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the celebrations.
Long-Standing Environmental Issue
Alarmingly severe concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the city have remained as a significant problem for over a decade and a half, with the problem gradually deteriorating.
During Diwali, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been documented to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the most severe readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once viewed as the world's most polluted metropolis.
Multiple Contamination Contributors
This crisis in the city is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, building projects, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.
Within these states, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating dangerous smog that remains stagnant over the city as colder air arrives.

Public health and economic consequences on the approximately 33 million inhabitants residing in the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous research.
These hazardous conditions leads to high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can even lead to cancer.
Air quality crisis is projected to be causing approximately 10k early mortalities per year in the city.
